The College started in the present premises in a small cadjan shed near the Holy Cross Church. Although the school had been in existence as a private school in some other location since 1880, it had been registered in the year 1902.
During the past 100 years the College progressed rapidly and became the leading boys school in the District of Kalutara. We owe the success story to the people who were at the helm, directing the school in the right manner in good times as well as in bad times.
Reverend Fathers of the Arch Diocese of Colombo managed the College until the year 1973. Mr. M J Anthony Cooray, an old boy of the College, took over as the first lay Principal in the year 1973. On his retirement in 1978, the Management of the College was handed over to the Marist Brothers.
Of these great heroes Reverend Fathers Leo, Herel, Robert, Breton, Croos, Chaulieu, Arthur, Pinto, Theodore and Reverend Brother Francis have gone to their eternal reward. We owe a deep debt of gratitude to them and also those who are living. They will remain lasting memorials in the minds of all Crusaders of Kalutara.

HOLY CROSS COLLEGE, KALUTARA
By the end of the 19th Centenary a Burgher gentleman called Brohier rented a bungalow adjoining the Holy Cross Church which belonged to the Kalutara Urban Council and started a private school.
In 1901, Rev. Fr. Leo Fernando OMI was able to name this school Holy Cross College after exerting much effort and whose zeal was to establish a school away from the Capital City for the children who preferred to study in the English Medium. Later the school was registered as Holy Cross Upper English School and later Government assisted same on a semi-governmental basis.
During the period of 1930 to 1946 when Rev. Fr. Gaston Chaulieu was the Director, a new structure of building were added to the school. Holy Cross College which was a mix school till such time was changed to a boys’ school. For the first time in 1936 the College students got the opportunity to sit for the London Matriculation and chamber of Commerce examinations. In 1947 Holy Cross College was promoted to a grade 1 school.
In the Inter School Shakespeare English Drama competition organized by the Ceylon Thespians in 1948 the College Drama Troupe won the Shakespeare Trophy ( The College Cadet Troop won the Herman Loos Trophy for the Island’s best school Cadet Troop.) When the schools were taken-over by the Government in 1960. Holy Cross College was left to function as a private school, nevertheless abstained charging a fee from the student.
Since 1978 the administration of Holy Cross College was left in the hands of Reverend Brothers of the Marist Congregation. Among the schools in Kalutara District, Holy Cross College excells in all its activities and have achieved an excellent standard in the spheres of education and sports.
Most of those who received their education from this school are now holding high offices at home as well as abroad. Among them are the high ranking civil officers such as the Members of Parliament, Ministers in the Cabinet, Secretaries of Ministries, Educational and Legal experts and Medical and engineering professionals.
With the issuing of this commemoration Stamp, the Hundredth Anniversary of the school which was celebrated in all its glory reaches its final point.
College Anthem
Let us arm, like young crusaders
Neath the Holy Cross, our Guide
Climbing up steep
Wisdom’s side
When we’re passing by the Grotto
Let us pray for Lanka’s sake
That from slumbers that oppress her
She may to the truth awake
CHORUS
Should our names be write in story
Let our college reap the glory
Sons are we: to each. A brother,
Proud we are to call Her Mother;
And when age fallen o’er us
In Her Praise we’ll join the chorus.
Fleet as fly the skimming swallows
O’er our limped, still lagoon
Bright as gleams the glowing pathway
Paved by yon slow – sailing moon
We shall, to our mother, hasten
Eager in our mental quest
Keeping white, the soul within us
By our Faith – our sield and crest.
Let our aims be high and noble
Let us to our Symbol cling
Let us strive to do our duty
Robbing labour of its sting.
